Then & Now
by Macario D.
TiuWhile in Bicutan
I was open with my views
And talked to all and sundry
About what I thought of the current
Political situation.
I was already in jail,
So what else could they do to me?
Now that I am free
I do not talk of my views
To all and sundry, lest I
Find myself back in prison.
I keep my views to myself,
Now that I am free.
January 14, 1980
-------------
Macario Tiu, a
political detainee during the Marcos years, has this to say about his poem: "I was
released from prison in December 1979, after four years of detention. Back in Davao, this
was what I felt."
