31   Gentle Fire From The Qur'an

These days I like reading bits and pieces of the Qur'an to soak in the eternal rhythm and reason.

You should try doing this as well. The Qur’an is not hocus-pocus, believe me. It is The Book of Wisdom.

Once I came across this passage:

And obey Allah and his Messenger;
And fall into no disputes,
Lest ye lose heart
And your power depart;
And be patient and persevering:
For Allah is with those
Who patiently persevere.

[Surah Anfaal: 46]

I can excuse my comrades in the PSJ struggle for not heeding this timeless wisdom since some of them honestly think that they will catch fire if they open the Qur'an. However, I cannot easily exempt the Muslims of Mindanao from my acerbic pen for not taking heed of this gentle but powerful Qur'anic passage.

The full force of the verse was especially brought to bear down on my infinitesimal mind recently, when Erap, to risk repeating him, thickly drawled, "Anyway, they’re all the same Muslims."

This man Erap, I tell you, speaks of consequential things, with his grandstand Huwag Ni’yo Akong Subukan! (Try Me Not!) putting him in the same precarious edge the way Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) did to Rizal.
